I, too, would suffer
in a cause...not in the blazing dessert on the way to
Jerusalem, but in the frozen North on the way to new knowledge
in the unpierced unknown.

Roald Amundsen and
his ship Gjoa complete the journey through
the Northwest Passage 1903 - 1906. The 72 foot long Gjoa
was a perfect choice for maneuvering through the shallow
and ice-choked straits of the Northwest Passage. |

It was the Norwegian explorer Roald
Amundsen whose determination finally guided a ship all
the way through the Northwest Passage. Amundsen, in the
small sloop Gjoa, sailed through the Northwest Passage
on his first attempt. The 31 year old Amundsen had trained
for years to become an explorer. He bathed in the icy
waters of fjords, skiing and playing football to toughen
himself. Roald, his six-man crew and his ship Gjoa slipped
out of Kristiana (now Oslo) harbour on the night of June
16, 1903.* |

Northwest Passage 100th Anniversary |
The ship Akademik Ioffe |
In 2006, it will be the 100th anniversary of the first ship
to complete the voyage through the Northwest Passage.
We realized that this is an important event that needs
to be celebrated. The celebrations that we have planned
to date are "through the eyes of the artists"
from the days of the early explorers to present, Inuit
and non-Inuit artists alike. We are promoting an educational
experience and are using the latest technology to create
an interactive emotional journey for all. |

Voyage aboard the ship Akademik Ioffe, to
travel through the Northwest Passage. We will begin the
voyage July 22 and return August 3, 2006. The Akademik
Ioffe will complete the journey of the Northwest
Passage and stop at various historical locations and spots
that artists have painted. We will experience the Northwest
Passage through the eyes of the artists (Inuit and non-Inuit).
